Events

The heart of the Across Cultures program is allowing a space for individuals from different cultures and industries to share knowledge, develop business contacts, and most importantly, to bring the knowledge gained back into their local community. The program has been organized into four focal points: Economic Equity, Human Rights, Access to Information, and Cultural Experience.

To register for or receive more information regarding one or more events, please email us at info@acrosscultures.org

HUMAN RIGHTS

An examination of the values and ethics that underlie the need for the awareness of Human Rights beyond borders. Whole…Free… and at Peace!

Ilvi Joe-Cannon, Regional Coordinator in Estonia (www.enut.ee)
With the support of a grant from the U.S. Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking, lead by Ambassador John R. Miller, the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW) and ENUT, the Estonian Women's Center, are collaborating on "Rejoining Prostitution and Sex Trafficking: Countering the Legalization and Decriminalization of Sex Industries and Focusing on Demand" to strengthen an existing anti-trafficking network in the Baltics. The project began in Tallinn Estonia in September 2004 and will move into Latvia and Lithuania at the end of 2005.

Dr. Carol A. Trenga, PhD, University of Washington, Seattle, WA USA
Sustainable Development and International Environmental Partnerships in Estonia

The recent accession of Estonia and other Baltic countries to the EU in May 2004 introduces new environmental laws and standards. These countries enter the EU with many pre-existing environmental challenges including a legacy of nuclear and hazardous waste from the period of Soviet occupation and an underdeveloped infrastructure for water and sewage treatment. In addition, the Baltics share many environmental problems faced by other industrialized nations such as soil, air and water pollution by farming and industry, and difficulties related to solid waste disposal. Just prior to and following the re-independence of Estonia, substantial technical and financial assistance from neighboring countries, including Sweden, Finland, and Denmark, addressed several urgent environmental issues. Significant progress has been made in many areas and numerous cooperative environmental projects were launched. The Constitution for Europe, adopted 18 June 2004 calls for the integration of environmental protection into EU policies and activities related to Sustainable Development.
